I noticed the mailing list mis-setting, because I was going to
supplement my earlier response; I have carefully gome through
apt-get and dselect, to make sure our test box was absolutely
totally current.

and I think the issue may be that the success occurred with a
person using Debian 'testing':

I had set the unit up to follow Debian 'stable' , in the
update archives enumerated at:
 	/etc/apt/sources.list

http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages#search_packages

'Testing' seems to hold: g++-4.0 (4.0.3-3)
 	http://packages.debian.org/testing/devel/g++-4.0
Which is a match to that list member's reported version

'Unstable' seems to hold: g++-4.0 (4.0.3-7)

===================

I will move the local unit to 'unstable' with a 'dist-upgrade'
and retest.

It is a rather pervasive move, and so it will take me a bit of
time.  ;)

1266 upgraded, 318 newly installed, 84 to remove and 66 not upgraded.
Need to get 1143MB of archives.
After unpacking 708MB of additional disk space will be used.
