Bill has the compiles under Debian testing working again; I
started testing after 1800 US Eastern, so I not have not had a
chance to look at history inserts yet. Tomorrow ...
With respect to the new ./doc/ Makefile, and viewing the
results, I added, using apt-get the following packages:
gv xpdf gsfonts-x11 ruby tetex-bin tetex-extra texinfo
texi2html
I needed to add the non-free archive, in /etc/apt/ to
sources.list to get latex2html . Here is the patch:
debian:/etc/apt# diff -u sources.list~ sources.list
--- sources.list~ 2007-05-17 18:33:03.000000000 -0400
+++ sources.list 2007-05-17 18:33:03.000000000 -0400

pristine as you remember it; I have been experimenting.]
Remember to run update first:
apt-get update
apt-get -y install latex2html
